In this section we review the latest surveys of public opinion on the application of biotechnology to agriculture, food and animal feed. We discuss the pros and cons of GM-food from the consumer´s point of view. A large part of this section is devoted to identification and labelling issues.
One of the main issues regarding GM food is how the ordinary consumer can identify the products. Given the variability of regulatory regimes under which GM products are produced and sold, how can the consumer´s right of choice be exercised in a globalised market? This is partly a question of knowing how to read product labels, and partly a matter of using common sense to assess the safest way to shop.
