New Russian scientific study, based on testing of female rats, demonstrated unexpected negative impact of feeding the animals GM soya on offspring posterity (56% of born rats died within three weeks) compared to the offsprings of those fed conventional soya (9% of born rats died within 3 weeks). It was also noticed how extremely weak the baby rats in the former group were, as 36% of born rats weighed less than 20 grams.
This study was done by scientists at the Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, which is a part of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). The findings were made public on October the 10th at a symposium on genetic modification organized by the National Association for Genetic Security (NAGS).
Dr. Irena Ermakova, who conducted the research team, expressed concern about the findings, saying the "the morphology and biochemical structures of rats are very similar to those of humans, and this makes the results we obtained very disturbing". Aleksey Kulikov, the vice-president of NAGS, said the data confirm the necessity of full scale tests of GM-products as regards their impact on living organisms.
