"The main arguments normally made in favour of GM are demonstrably false" said Michael Meacher MP in his public lecture at the Nordic House in Reykjavík on April the 3rd. Meacher pointed out that the GM technology is neither more precise nor safer than traditional cross-breeding, quite the contrary. The evidence shows how GM crops lead to less yields and more use of pesticides. Neiter has GM agriculture capacity to counter world hunger since lack of food is not the real cause of famine or under-nourishment.
In his lecture, Meacher reviewed numerous indications of health and environmental risks posed by GM crops, and called for further research and tougher legislation to control the use of GMOs. He pointed out that no separation distances will prevent GM crops from contaminating conventional and organic crops and that ´co-existence´ "is a mirage and impossible".
Michael Meacher was invited to Iceland by the Campaign for Information on GMOs. Meacher is today among the longest serving Members of the British Parliament. He served as minister for environment in the Blair government for six years, and has been very active in the debate on GM and its use in agriculture.
