Can the Icelandic Public Avoid GM-Food?

Consumers´ Association provides a lead despite lack of labelling

Iceland does not yet have law on the labeling of GM-food. Consequently, the Icelandic public is not provided with information on whether food products contain GM ingredients, contrary to other European countries where mandatory labeling of GM food was introduced many years ago. But for the growing number of people who wish to avoid GM food, the Consumers´ Association of Iceland has recently published preliminary guidance on how to prevent such products from entering the trolley.

Consumers may decide to buy food products from countries which have introduced mandatory labeling of GM food, such as the European countries. Alternatively, consumers can educate themselves on which food products from other countries are likely to be GM. The Consumers´ Association refers to an American website (truefoodnow.org) and provides list of common GM food products in America, most of which can probably be found on the supermarket shelves in Iceland as well.

See the American shoppers´ guide and an article (in Icelandic) on the homepage of the Consumers´ Association of Iceland.
